It is estimated that 22 million of the world's children under 5 are overweight or obese! Yes, childhood obesity can be caused by many factors, but two of the biggest contributors to obesity and other childhood disorders like heart disease are lack of exercise and poor dietary habits. The benefits to physical exercise are extremely important for reducing the risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Exercising and eating correctly are fantastic for building healthy muscles, bones and joints and improving over-all psychological well-being.
Excess childhood weight is placing an unprecedented burden on children's health, triggering a host of dangerous health problems once seen only in adults.
The bottom line is, children look for role models, and if they see you exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet, they will be more apt to do so as well.
If your child portrays childhood disorders; you may notice the following:
- your child is out of breath after climbing a few stairs;
- your child can't touch his shoes;
- is mocked and teased because he is fat;
- his weight is greater than is normal for his age;
Children with disabilities are less likely to engage in moderate physical activity, yet they have similar needs to promote their health and prevent unnecessary childhood disorders. Maintaining and improving cardiovascular fitness assures that children with disabilities too will enter adulthood with a sound investment toward their future health.
At Junglegym World, we have jungle gyms and other equipment designed for kids with lower limb disabilities that would prohibit their ability to propel the swing with their legs. Wheelchair jungle gyms too, provide accessible barrier-free design for physical, psychological, and therapeutic gross motor play.
Don't let inactivity cause childhood disorders with your child; get them moving .... towards health, vitality and a sound mind.
